Sikh ladies riding in a covered carriage drawn by two bullocks, temple in a landscape background
by Kapur Singh, Punjab, probably Amritsar, dated 1874 watercolour with gold on paper, inscribed in Gurmukhi with date V.S.1931/A.D.1874, framed 36.8 by 49.2 cm. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Lord Hobhouse (1819-1904), who had a distinguished judicial career in India. The inscription says that the painter Kapur Singh, who was the son of Kishan Singh, practised in the Alhluwalia quarter of Amritsar. Both Kapur Singh and his father are recorded artists and other examples of their work are in the India Office Library, London. A picture from a closely related, but slightly earlier, series is illustrated in Colnaghi, 1978, no.90.
