Great Britain Commonwealth Mule 1/2 Crown/Shilling 1651 VF

Great Britain
Commonwealth Mule 1/2 Crown/Shilling 1651 VF (Plated), Tower mint, Sun mm, cf. KM391.1 (for regular issue), cf. S-3215, ESC-19 (R7, 2 Known) (prev. ESC-428. 5.85gm. A most intriguing and enigmatic issue, and certainly one of the absolute rarities of the entire Commonwealth series. While the origins of such a curiosity are unknown, the result is undeniably fascinating. Featuring a Shilling obverse and a drastically larger 1/2 Crown reverse, the partial legends struck just off of the Shilling-sized flan. The specimen exhibits evidence of an earlier silvering that has mellowed to a light champagne glow and worn away after time, revealing fine pewter-patinated surfaces beneath. Having been off the market since its last appearance at auction as part of Davissons March 2002 auction where it realized $3,000, we anticipate an elevated enthusiasm from the specialist in Commonwealth coinage. NGC notes this coin as not suitable for encapsulation as it is plated. Sold with old collector's flip and Davissons auction tag.
