Sir James Thornhill (1675-1734) Great Parlour-door, Pan & Syrinx; Bed Chamber door Nept[une] & Iphimedia Two drawings, pencil and grey wash, ruled brown ink border, ink inscriptions and measurements in borders, sheets 197 x 140 mm (7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in) and 170 x 110 mm (6 3/4 x 4 1/4 in), tipped onto paper supports with old ink attributions to Thornhill in the lower centre, surface dirt, some marginal staining, the first mentioned with small nick in the upper right corner (unframed) (2) Provenance: Christopher Mendez, London ⁂ Two original drawings for overdoor paintings from an unknown commission, both depicting stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Croft-Murray does not appear to record a house with these subjects, so presumably for an unrealised project. Another pair of drawings by Thornhill for the same project are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum [see acc. D.3-1891]
